My "obsession" with Syracuse started when I was about 12-14 years old. I could read day and night about ancient history and Syracuse (founded in 733 BC) along with Sparta were probably a pinnacle. By the 5th century BC it became the most powerful city in the Mediterranean. But sadly during the Second Punic wars after a siege lasting 2 years, Syracuse fell to Rome (in 212 BC). The most fascinating aspect of this battle for me was the fact that among city defenders who bravely fought and died was found... Archimedes - the renowned mathematician and inventor. For instance he invented a catapult and not only designed it but definitely tested it... on poor Romans! Sadly he was killed, despite the given orders not to harm him.
Must-see sights in Syracuse are a Greek Theater (6th century BC) and a Roman Amphitheater (3 rd century AD - free to visit). Also highly recommended are the Catacombs of San Giovanni (guided tours only). This place claims to be the second largest in the whole of Italy and according to our guide was visited once by St Peter!
